Among the bazillion extracurricular things that Joel does, one of his favorites is going to schools and speaking to children about his jobs.
What does Joel do and what could he possibly say that would make a group of 20+ kindergartners sit still AND listen?
Joel's full-time, day-job as an elected official and Clerk of Byron Township means that he oversees and manages elections. Sadly, most adults find elections boring and don't even vote. But, Joel took what an election was to a very simple level, as seen by the ballot on the left, to show the kids what they have to look forward to when they turn 18 years old. I found this ballot hilarious and very endearing that Joel would come up with something like this so I had to post about it.
The election results were astounding! Burt easily took Ernie with a 14 to 9 vote. The new kid on the block, Handy Manny, won in a landslide over Dora with a 15 to 8 vote. Not surprisingly, cookies took the lead with 18 votes versus 5 votes for apples. And, the color red squeaked by with 12 votes over 11 votes for the color blue.
Joel's second job as a paid-on-call firefighter is clearly a more riveting topic for children to listen to. Joel brings all his gear and puts it on while explaining the importance of being a firefighter which always prompts 101 questions from the wide-eyed children.
I can assure you that Joel enjoys these speaking engagements just as much or more than the kids do! I never new that I'd have such a prolific speaker as a husband! :)

2 thing(s) you said:
We might just have him come to our school ... just kidding. What a great idea. Way to go Joel.
Comment for your last post: Emma looks adorable in both pics & one thing you can try if you really hate the shots is to ask if there is another nurse available. Two nurses can two legs at the same time and it is so much quicker. (The only time they usually can't is if the office is really busy.)
that's great. i vote for bert!
