We made it back in good shape. Our last two days in D.C. included some heavy sightseeing combined with some typical D.C. heat and humidity. Our last day, Tuesday, was nearly unbearable...but we continued on to take full advantage of being in the Nation's capitol! I want to go back, there is so much more to see. One could spend several weeks there and not see it all.
More pics to come...Vietnam Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, etc

double-click to enlarge and see the detail of the fresco in the dome of the U.S. Capitol. It's beautiful and was painted by an Italian immigrant.

East state has TWO statues in the U.S. Capitol. One of Michigan's two statues is being replaced with a statue of President Gerald R. Ford. The replaced statue goes back to the State Capitol. Pictured above is
Lewis Cass...he gets to stay.

The U.S. Capitol, a beautiful building and filled with history! Lady Freedom stands on top of the capitol's dome.
She is 19.5 feet tall. By law, no other statue in D.C. can be taller.
Did you know that the President is not allowed it the U.S. Capitol unless invited?

Joel and I were very happy to oblige (see sign above) to this rule posted at Arlington Cemetery

The tomb of unknown soldier was very meaningful to see. The Pomp & Circumstance
that surrounded the changing of the guard ceremony was absolutely
beautiful and brought tears to my eyes.

We made it to the zoo, via the metro, after a long, hot afternoon at Arlington Cemetery...I was dead, done, hot, not moving. I sat on a park bench and did some wonderful
people-watching while Joel sprinted through the entire zoo in about 60 minutes.
