As adults we typically learn to control our impulses and surges of emotions to maintain, at least, the appearance of having some social graces. I brutally found out today that this is NOT the case for toddlers (surprise, surprise). Today I played referee for an inane amount of time between a 2 year old and a 14 month old. Fun times. How can they look so sweet one second and act like the Bride of Chucky the next? Half of the time I took the hands-off approach, hoping they'd just figure it out, hmmm...not so lucky. The other half of the time I played U.N. negotiator, which, by the way, is useless when dealing with toddlers. I'm not sure how many toys were chucked or how many elbows were thrown, but I stopped counting.
My girlfriend Bradi is currently at the hospital on the verge of giving birth to her and her husband's second child while Joel and I are watching their cute-as-a-bug two year old. In toddler years, 10 months is a HUGE age difference and even a bigger difference when their personalities are night-and-day.
My girlfriend's daughter is a quieter, play-by-herself, need-my-space kind of girl while my daughter, Emma, is a squealing, smiling, please-play-with-me-while-I-stand-6 inches-from your-face sort of girl (who occasionally likes to grab toys and run). Placing these two personalities together, sometimes, is like oil and water. Today it was.
We suffered through lots of tears, tantrums and yelling (not by me) and I think it is safe to say that bedtime was welcomed by BOTH little girls (and me!).
The pics I posted here are from last September, but at least show there was "love" at one time. I guess all the wishing in the world, by moms, can't force the title of BFF (Best Friends Forever)!
Tomorrow they'll be best friends again...

5 thing(s) you said:
This post is great. You are a great friend to volunteer to help out.
I love that kids just let it "all hang out". Well ... most of the time. Can you imagine adults having tantrums, dropping to the floor in a puddle when they don't get their way, or saying what they are feeling even if it's rude? Funny & scary. =)
This sounds all too familiar!!!
Emma takes after you. LOL.
Phew... what a day huh?
Just think what its going to be like when the next Kreider kid is thrown into the mix! Can't wait to see.
Hey, Brenda, enjoy that friend's new baby. She is a cutie. I think your blog is so awesome with all the pics, link, etc. I would so like to know how to do all that so if you'd like to share your knowledge one piece at a time, I'd love it. I hope you enjoy a good Friday the thirteenth and a great weekend. It's it neat we don't have to worry about all that superstition stuff??? Warmly, Gayle
